Health Benefits

Because popcorn is a whole grain it is high in fiber, which makes up one of its many health benefits. Fiber helps keep digestion normal, control cholesterol and helps control appetite.  Many other attributes include that it is low in calories, high in protein, contains good carbohydrates, is a good source of potassium, vitamin B and folic acid.  The hull of popcorn contains a significant amount of polyphenols, antioxidants that prevent damage to cells and have disease fighting properties.  Red popcorn has the added benefit of containing anthocyanin and cyanidin, a class of anthocyanin that is particularly potent antioxidant. Anthocyanin cause the red color in the hull and help protect the body with anti-inflammatory properties.  All of this adds up to a very healthy snack.
